When the Legislature returned from summer recess earlier this month, CSDC asked the California charter school movement to urge “no” on three “charter killer” bills pending in Sacramento: AB 2214, AB 2484, and SB 1343.
CSDC is excited to report that your advocacy work was a SUCCESS!
With your help, two of this year’s three “charter killer” bills have been defeated:
AB 2214 (Garcia and Lee) • DIED IN COMMITTEE
AB 2214 would have subjected charter school facility projects to two separate sets of regulations–at both the local and state levels. 200 people joined CSDC’s effort to defeat this bill by contacting their Legislators and expressing their concerns. This is the second year in a row that charter advocates have defeated legislation on this topic.
AB 2484 (Bonta) • DIED IN COMMITTEE
AB 2484 would have made catastrophic changes to the Charter School Facilities Grant Program by greatly restricting the amount of funding that charter schools may receive. Nearly 600 people joined CSDC’s effort to defeat this bill.
Unfortunately, one “charter killer” bill made it out of committee and is headed for a final vote. We are working with our allies to kill this bill on the Assembly Floor and we need your help!
SB 1343 (Leyva) would require all new charter schools (established after January 1, 2025) to participate in CalPERS and CalSTRS. We have collectively built great momentum towards the defeat of this bill, with previous CSDC advocacy on this bill culminating in hundreds of emails to State Senators. We now ask that you email your State Legislators again and urge a vote of “No” on the amended version of this bill. Take one minute to email your State Legislators.
Thanks again to everyone who participated in our campaigns – together we can fight and win against attacks on charter schools.
