The governor and Legislature reached accord over the weekend on a $6.5 billion school reopening package that will compel most schools to offer at least some form of in-person instruction starting April 1. The plan calls for prioritizing, but not requiring, vaccination of school staff as a condition of school reopening and partially softens some of the sharp corners in prior reopening proposals.

The Department of Finance today released detailed draft legislation to implement Governor Newsom’s proposed $4.6 billion grant program to provide additional academic and other supports to students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Newsom’s original budget proposal released on January 8, 2021 offered only a bare-bones summary while the legislation released today fills in most of the details.

The Charter Schools Division of the California Department of Education (CDE) has posted a request for applications (RFA) for the Public Charter School Grant Program (PCSGP). The PCSGP provides funding to support planning, implementation, replication, and/or expansion of “high quality” charter schools. The post indicates that $6 million are available for 2020-23 grant cycle.
