Charter Currents: New Special Education Requirements Take Effect in 2020-21

New requirements related to special education affect charter schools at the start of this school year. Effective July 1, 2020, Assembly Bill 1172 (AB 1172) established two new responsibilities related to special education for Local Education Agencies (LEAs), including charter schools. Also, the 2020-21 state budget education trailer bill, Senate Bill 98, established a new requirement related to Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). This article will address the new requirements and provide guidance on best practices as instruction resumes this fall, often via distance learning.
