Charter Currents: Governor, Legislative Leaders Reach Agreement on School Reopening Legislation

Published March 01, 2021 16:53

Sacramento, CA — The governor and Legislature reached accord over the weekend on a $6.5 billion school reopening package that will compel most schools to offer at least some form of in-person instruction starting April 1. The plan calls for prioritizing, but not requiring, vaccination of school staff as a condition of school reopening and partially softens some of the sharp corners in prior reopening proposals.

During a press conference this morning, legislative leaders noted their intent to vote on the package by Thursday of this week and the governor indicated his intent to sign the legislation. This article summarizes CSDC’s initial read of the complex package, which is reflected in identical versions of both Assembly and Senate Bill 86. CSDC suggests that charter schools immediately review the terms of this legislation and begin to strategize accordingly.
