Recent California legislation placed direct focus on the performance of charter school governing boards. Among other changes, SB 126 (Leyva) made most charter school governing boards subject to the Ralph M. Brown Act, which guarantees the public’s right to attend and participate in public meetings of local legislative bodies.

Assemblymember Patrick O’Donnell (D—Long Beach) recently amended AB 1316, a bill that would impose a vast and devastating array of new restrictions and costs on California’s charter schools.

The Charter Schools Development Center (CSDC) has developed the Annual School Planning Calendar to aid charter leaders in preparing for and tracking critical dates and deadlines related to various operational areas for the 2020-21 school year.

2020 was unequivocally a memorable year. We saw our membership base grow and with it the charter movement strengthen its resolve in the face of a pandemic, social unrest, and political uncertainty.
