Two weeks remain until the May 13 application deadline for this year's California Charter Schools Leadership Institute, which will be held on June 19-24, 2016 at the scenic Marconi Conference Center in Marshall, CA, a small coastal town located about 60 miles north of San Francisco.
If you are still deciding whether to apply, you might consider what '15 Leadership Institute alumni have said about their experiences at the event.
New charter school leaders will find the Institute
challenging and rewarding.
The Leadership Institute was a challenging and rewarding experience. Prior to participating, I had been concerned about the intensity I anticipated versus my relative inexperience (one year in the position) in my role as Executive Director. My concerns were quickly turned into total engagement. I was able to use my own school documents during financial and legal sessions, choose breakout sessions that addressed my needs as an administrator, and openly question, and dialogue with, all the other participants about any and all school topics. The CSDC staff was on board with us 100%, even when we turned meals and evenings into relaxed work sessions. The icing on the cake was the connections I made with charter school administrators from my area. Now that we are home, these connections have become valued, professional relationships. — Julia Knight, Executive Director, Northern Summit Academy
Participants will build helpful relationships with fellow
California charter school leaders.
The Leadership Institute was helpful to me in the following two ways. I am a better leader after attending the Leadership Institute because I now know the key important components that must be in place, such as the budget, MOU, bylaws, and governance, in order to run a successful charter. The other is the building of a supportive network and sharing of successful ideas and strategies that help to enhance my work back at the site. — Lee Yang, Superintendent, Urban Charter Schools Collective
Alumni have found the event to be inspiring, educational,
The Leadership Institute was truly a unique and rewarding professional experience! The collective expertise–from CDSC staff and other school leaders–that I had access to during the week was inspiring, educational, and affirming. I ended the week with an abundance of new ideas (practical and conceptual), connections, and knowledge that I honestly don’t think I could have gained anywhere else. — Stacey Giles Emory, Director, San Carlos Charter Learning Center
About half of the '16 cohort has been admitted.
