About

The Charter School Leadership Institute is a nationally renowned leadership training opportunity for California charter school leaders. This intensive training is designed to ensure that charter school leaders have the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively lead their schools.

The Institute is delivered in a blended format, consisting of an intensive, week-long summer “bootcamp” followed by a “practicum” that consists of online trainings and pracitical exercises scheduled periodically throughout the school year.

The Institute is organized by the Charter Schools Development Center (CSDC), a non-profit resource center that provides expert technical assistance, training, and resources to California charter school developers, operators, charter-granting agencies, and policymakers.

Dates & Location

The Leadership Institute begins with a weeklong “bootcamp” beginning Sunday, June 24 and ending Friday, June 29, 2012 at the Marconi Conference Center in Point Reyes, California.

The year-long “practicum” trainings do not require any travel as they are conducted online throughout the school year.

Who Should Apply?

The Institute is designed for and targeted at new and experienced California charter school principals and other school leaders who have direct responsibility for overseeing and managing a broad range of responsibilities at their schools. The Institute is not appropriate for charter school developers whose charters have not yet been approved, charter school personnel who do not have direct roles in administrative functions, or charter school consultants or service providers. Preference will be given to those applicants whose needs most closely align with the mission and goals of the Institute, as well as to those schools serving disadvantaged students populations.

Topics & Schedule

Leadership Institute features a range of in-depth sessions, guest speakers, case studies, and group activities that address a broad range of key charter school leadership concepts and skills. The pace of the Institute is fast, intense, and engaging. Topics of focus include charter school leadership, finance, legal concepts, governance, academic performance measurement, accountability and renewal, charter school personnel and labor relations.

During the summer “bootcamp,” participants will be introduced to a number of assignments that they will need to complete during the “practicum” portion of the training that will be held throughout the schoolyear.

Cost

The Institute is offered at a fraction of its actual cost. This fee covers registration, materials, and presentations for both the summer bootcamp and yearlong practicum. In addition, the registration fee also covers all meals, five nights of double occupancy (same sex) lodging at the Marconi Conference Center.

Participants are expected to pay the costs of their own travel to and from the conference center as well as any incidentals.

Single occupancy lodging arrangements are available for this program at the additional cost of $750. Please note there are a limited number of single occupancy rooms available and they will be reserved on a first come, first serve basis. Please contact our office for details. Although we will try to accommodate your rooming preferences, please be aware that you may be matched with a roommate as necessary.
